Okay, it’s finally here – winter. This is the time of year that skin goes dry and flaky, lips become chapped and the summer radiance fades away. Without tweaking your routine, you can be at risk of coming out the other side looking a bit withered. Although, it doesn’t take a whole new skincare collection to stay on top of it this winter (although we’ll never say no to more skincare!). Just follow our 6 top tips to keeping the glow this winter.
It’s not rocket science – if you’re not hydrated, your skin won’t be either. When the months get colder, we tend to forget to keep up with drinking our 2-3 litres of water as we’re not noticing the usual dehydration we get from the steamier months. As our skin is the largest organ, and water makes up so much of us, so it’s no wonder that getting the recommended amount daily can make you have supple skin, creating a rosy glow due to increased circulation & moisture, and faster detoxification.
If you want soft, glowing skin all year round, moisturising is an absolute must. Even though water is great at hydrating, it’s also the last organ that it gets too, so applying moisture directly to the skin can really help. Obviously we prefer moisturiser that is all-natural and organic that locks in moisture.
That’s why I personally go through a bottle of Bettaderm every winter! It’s an all-natural body oil that hydrates the skin and doesn’t dry out, and it simply smells amazing. Bettaderm is our secret key to keeping the glow this winter.
Serums are thinner and lighter than moisturisers and formulated with powerful natural ingredients like antioxidants. These work to deeply penetrate the skin and leave a silky film, making it more even and younger-looking.
Antioxidants help during winter as they repair environmental damage and detoxifies, as well as boosting collagen. Our favourites are the Meditree Kakadu Plum face serum or the ECO. Vitamin C Face Serum, either of which will be sure to keep skin shining, and prevent signs of ageing.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as omega-3 and omega-6 are key elements of the diet to assist in skin care. These fatty acids not only build healthy cell membranes, they also produce our natural oil barrier, therefore being crucial in keeping skin looking hydrated, plump, and younger. Without getting adequate amounts of EFAs skin is more prone to dryness, inflammation, whiteheads and blackheads.
Keeping the balance is what is most important, Omega-3 is often found in fish like salmon and mackerel, with vegan and vegetarian options being walnuts and flaxseed, and is often deficient in modern diets. Omega-6 is found in grains and cooking oils. If adding these to your diet is too difficult, try supplementing with Melrose Omega or Flaxseed Oils.
Despite how chilly it is in the morning, try to opt for a shower that doesn’t leave your skin red. Hot water causes skin to dry out and become irritated. It also damages the keratin cells which prevents moisture from locking in. Try keep it warm and moisturise ASAP to make sure your skin doesn’t become damaged and dry!
To keep moisture throughout the day to avoid drying out, consider a diffuser with your favourite essential oils to humidify the air.
When you’re finally back under the warm doona every night drifting off to sleep, your cortisol (stress hormone) levels fall. This triggers a cascade to start repairing daytime skin damage and making more collagen. A bad night sleep can worsen skin conditions, cause inflammation and breakdown of collagen and of course, causes puffy and dark eye bags!
Using a powerful night-time serum such as ACURE Blue Tansy Oil can have you waking up with flawless, soft and supple skin.
