We sat down with champion shooter Laetisha Scanlan, who gave us insights on how to reach that stage where health is optimal and performance is unmatched. Laetisha’s dedication to her craft is truly inspiring, and we’re thrilled to share her secrets with you!
A lot of people assume that being a shooter I live in a rural area or come from a farming background but that wasn’t the case, I grew up in suburbia. My Dad introduced me into the sport, he was a recreational Clay target shooter, and I was always at the gun club with him on weekends. When I was 15, I decided that I should ‘have a go’ and basically the rest is history- fell in love with the competition side of the sport, was a great way to bond with my Dad and recognised the amazing opportunities to travel the world.
What are three things that you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle as an athlete?
For me and my mental health, exercising is a big priority on my list, I like to do a combination of cardio and weights 4x week. Recovery also goes hand in hand with this, ice baths, massages and Pilates ensure that I am taking care of my body. Finally, hydration and sleep- I know that if I am dehydrated and tired this is not optimal for my performance, you’ll always see me carrying my 1.2 litre water bottle everywhere I go. I love my sleep so ensuring 8 hours a night is really essential for me to be the best version of myself.
How many times a week do you train?
4 days at the gym and 2-3 days at the range.
I never thought that I would be an Olympian or a professional athlete, it wasn’t till I started shooting that I got the drive to see how far I could take this passion.
I would love to make a 3rd Olympics and ultimately medal.
Gosh, that’s a tricky question, 5 years seems like a long time away, at the moment I am just living in the moment and enjoying the journey. But I would love to compete at the LA Olympics in 2028.
Winning back-to-back Commonwealth Games gold medals was amazing. I got to compete on my birthday in front of a home crowd, with all my friends and family supporting me, that was a very special win.
Being better than I was yesterday and pushing myself to see how good I can be as an athlete.
My positive attitude and my resilient nature definitely contribute to making me a good athlete
I am lucky that in my sport I have flexibility in my diet, we are not governed by weight categories for competing. Although I am a self-confessed sweet tooth, I generally like to keep a 80/20 ratio with my nutrition. This means an 80% focus on nutritious foods like whole grains, vegetables and fruits and 20% on treating yourself.
You’ll never see me say no to a glass of wine, a bowl of pasta or some tiramisu!
