    Lifestyle Changes You Can Make as a Resolution That Will Stick!

    Making lifestyle changes as New Year’s resolutions can be impactful, but it’s essential to approach them in a way that increases the likelihood of success. 

    71% of Australians – equivalent to almost 14 million people -– have set a New Year’s resolution for 2023. Women (72%) are slightly more likely than men (70%) to set goals for the new year.

    Diet and exercise-related resolutions are by far the most common, with Aussies keen for a healthy start to the year. The survey found more than 1 in 3 (34%) have pledged to adopt healthier eating habits. 

    Sadly, it is estimated only 8% will stick to their plan! Unrealistic expectations, pressure and the amount of goals can be blockers to these resolutions, but setting yourself up for success is not a hard thing to do. 

    Here are some tips for making resolutions that are more likely to stick:

    Set Realistic Goals: Make sure your goals are achievable and realistic. Set small, measurable milestones that you can track over time and start small instead of making drastic changes – As these become habits, you can build on them.

    Focus on One Thing at a Time: Concentrate on changing one behavior at a time. Once you’ve successfully integrated one change into your routine, you can move on to the next. And make sure to have clearly defined goals instead of making a vague resolution like “exercise more” or “drink more water” – make yourself a list of specific goals like “go for a 30-minute walk three times a week.”

    Find an Accountability Partner: Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or coworker who can provide support and help keep you accountable and help you celebrate your progress! Positive reinforcement can help motivate you to continue and building a support system can be impactful. Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your goals. This could include joining a fitness class, cooking healthy meals with a friend, or finding an online community with similar objectives – finding like minded people can be a great way to go!

    Incorporate Enjoyable Activities and Integrate New Habits into Existing Routines: Choose activities that you enjoy! Whether it’s a form of exercise or a hobby, doing things you love increases the likelihood of sticking with them along with continuing your usual activities. This makes it easier for the changes to become a seamless part of your life.

    Be Flexible and Patient: Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are a natural part of change. Be flexible and adjust your plan if needed, rather than giving up altogether. Just remember: Change takes time. Be patient with yourself and recognize that progress may not happen overnight.

    Focus on the Positive: Frame your resolutions in a positive light. Instead of saying “stop doing X,” say “start doing Y.” Positive goals are often more motivating! And remember you can always re-assess and adjust – check what’s working and what isn’t and set yourself up for success! 

    Seek Professional Guidance: If your resolutions involve significant changes to your health or lifestyle, consider seeking advice from professionals such as a nutritionist, personal trainer, or mental health counselor. Don’t make incredibly drastic changes in your diet without the opinion of a medical professional – this can be harmful to your health. 

    Remember, the key is to build sustainable habits gradually – and not everything in one day. 

    By incorporating these principles, you can increase the chances of making resolutions that will stick throughout the year so you can achieve any goal you set for yourself!
