Your gastrointestinal tract is around 7.5 to 9 metres long. That is a huge internal system, winding through your body and quietly doing work every minute of the day. Every mouthful of food you eat travels through this tract, where your body breaks it down, absorbs nutrients, removes waste and communicates with your immune system, metabolism and hormones.
When we talk about gut health, it should not be seen as just another wellness trend. It is one of the foundations of how the body stays well.
Your body needs nutrients, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to make hormones and support the glands that produce them. These glands include the thyroid in the neck, the adrenal glands above the kidneys, the pancreas, the ovaries in women, the testes in men, and key hormone-signalling centres in the brain such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
Hormones are chemical messengers. They tell your body when to create energy, when to store fuel, when to wake up, when to rest, when to respond to stress, when to reproduce and when to repair.
So where does the gut fit in?
Your gut does not make all your hormones, and not every health issue starts in the gut. But modern research continues to show that the gut microbiome — the community of bacteria and microbes living in the digestive tract — plays an important role in metabolism, inflammation, nutrient absorption, immune signalling and hormone-related pathways.
This is why gut health deserves to be taken seriously.
Your body is constantly producing, using, breaking down and clearing hormones. Once a hormone has delivered its message, the body often needs to process and eliminate it so that signal does not continue for longer than required. The liver, gut, bowel movements and microbiome all play a role in this process. One example is oestrogen. In women, the ovaries produce oestrogen to support the menstrual cycle, fertility, bone health, skin, mood and many other functions. Oestrogen is also present in men, although in smaller amounts.
A group of gut bacteria known as the estrobolome is involved in how oestrogens are metabolised and potentially recycled in the body. This does not mean the gut controls everything. But it does mean that poor gut function, low fibre intake, constipation, inflammation or an imbalanced microbiome may influence how efficiently the body processes certain hormones.
Another example is insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and helps regulate blood glucose. Diet, fibre intake, gut bacteria and metabolic health can all influence how the body responds to glucose and insulin.
The thyroid is another important example. Thyroid hormones help regulate metabolism, body temperature, energy, skin, hair and many other functions. Your thyroid depends on nutrients such as iodine, selenium, zinc, iron and protein. If your gut is not absorbing nutrients well, it can make it harder for the body to maintain normal healthy function.
For men, the prostate is one of the clearest examples of how hormones, diet, inflammation and long-term health are connected.
The prostate is not a hormone-producing gland in the same way as the testes, thyroid or adrenal glands. But it is highly influenced by male hormones, especially androgens such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, often called DHT. The process starts in the brain. The hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, and the pituitary gland then sends hormonal signals to the testes to produce testosterone. Testosterone can then be converted into DHT, which has a strong influence on prostate tissue.
The prostate also produces prostate-specific antigen, known as PSA. PSA is not a hormone. It is a protein made by prostate cells and plays a role in semen function. However, PSA production is influenced by androgen activity, which is why PSA is often discussed in the context of prostate health.
This is where the gut becomes important.
Diet, fibre, body weight, inflammation, insulin balance and the gut microbiome can all influence the internal environment that affects men’s health over time. A diet low in fibre and high in ultra-processed foods may contribute to poorer metabolic health and higher inflammatory load. A fibre-rich diet, on the other hand, supports bowel regularity, feeds beneficial gut bacteria and helps the body maintain healthier elimination pathways.
This does not mean fibre alone controls testosterone, DHT or PSA. That would be too simplistic. But it does mean the gut should not be ignored when thinking about male hormone health, prostate health and healthy ageing.
For men over 40, this matters. The prostate sits quietly in the background for much of a man’s life. Then, as men age, it often becomes one of the key health areas they are forced to pay attention to. My view is simple: do not wait until the body is shouting. Pay attention while it is still whispering.
For women, the gut-hormone connection is just as important.
The ovaries produce oestrogen and progesterone to regulate the menstrual cycle and support reproductive health. This process is also guided by the brain, with the hypothalamus and pituitary gland sending signals that influence hormone production.
The gut plays a role through digestion, nutrient absorption, bowel regularity and the microbiome. The estrobolome, a specialised group of gut bacteria involved in oestrogen metabolism, may influence how oestrogens are processed and recycled in the body.
Diet and fibre can influence this balance. Fibre helps bind waste, supports bowel movements and feeds beneficial bacteria. When a woman changes her diet, especially her fibre intake, she may also change the way her body eliminates or reabsorbs certain compounds.
Again, the gut does not control everything. Hormones are complex. But the gut is part of the conversation.
If you feel wired one moment and exhausted the next, your blood sugar, stress response and digestive health may all be involved. A healthy gut helps you break down food, absorb nutrients and support stable energy production. When your diet is low in fibre and high in refined carbohydrates, it can contribute to blood sugar swings, cravings and energy crashes. This does not mean every energy problem is a gut problem. But if your digestion is poor and your energy is unpredictable, it is worth looking at the gut first.
Bowel regularity matters. If waste is sitting in the bowel for too long, your body may not be clearing processed compounds as efficiently as it should. Fibre helps add bulk to the stool, supports regular bowel movements and feeds beneficial gut bacteria.
Constipation, bloating and sluggish digestion are often signs that your gut needs more support. For hormone health, regular elimination is one of the simplest places to begin.
Skin is often one of the first places people notice internal changes. Hormonal shifts can influence oil production, breakouts, dryness and sensitivity. Gut health may also influence skin through inflammation, nutrient absorption and the gut-skin axis.
If your skin flares when your digestion is poor, when you are stressed, or around your menstrual cycle, your gut may be part of the picture.
The gut and brain are in constant communication. The gut microbiome can influence inflammation, neurotransmitter pathways and stress signalling. At the same time, stress can slow digestion, alter bowel habits and change the gut environment.
This is why people often feel digestive symptoms during stressful periods. It is also why supporting the gut can be part of a broader approach to mood, resilience and calm.
Cravings are not just about willpower. They can be influenced by blood sugar swings, poor sleep, stress hormones, low protein intake, low fibre intake and gut bacteria. When your meals are not satisfying, or when your gut is not supported, your body may keep chasing quick energy.
A fibre-rich diet helps you feel fuller for longer and supports healthier appetite regulation.
Sleep and hormones are deeply connected. Cortisol, melatonin, insulin and blood sugar regulation can all influence sleep quality. Poor sleep can then affect appetite, stress resilience and metabolism the next day.
The gut may contribute through the gut-brain axis, digestive comfort, inflammation and microbial rhythms. If you regularly wake during the night, feel restless, or wake unrefreshed, your gut health and evening food choices may be worth reviewing.
When your gut is not functioning well, you may not absorb nutrients as effectively. Protein, magnesium, zinc, iron, B vitamins, vitamin D, omega-3 fats and antioxidants all support normal energy, repair, hormone function and immune health. If your diet is poor, your gut is inflamed, or your bowel habits are irregular, your body may not be getting what it needs to recover well.
This can show up as fatigue, low resilience, poor training recovery, dull skin, low mood or feeling older than you should.
One of the most practical ways to support gut health is to increase fibre. Most people know they should eat more fibre, but many still do not get enough. Fibre helps support bowel regularity, feeds beneficial bacteria, supports the gut barrier and contributes to healthier metabolic function. Food should always be the foundation. That means eating more vegetables, legumes, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains and resistant starch foods where tolerated.
But many people also need a simple way to increase daily fibre without feeling bloated or overwhelmed. That is where PHGG can be useful.
PHGG stands for Partially Hydrolysed Guar Gum. It is a gentle, soluble fibre made from guar beans. Unlike some fibres that can feel heavy or gritty, PHGG is low viscosity, meaning it mixes easily and is generally well tolerated by many people. It acts as a prebiotic fibre, helping to feed beneficial bacteria in the gut and support healthy bowel function. PHGG should not be thought of as a magic hormone supplement. That would be overstating it.
A more accurate way to think about PHGG is this: it helps support one of the foundations that hormone health depends on — a healthier gut environment, better fibre intake and more regular elimination. When your gut is moving well, your microbiome is being fed, and your diet is rich in plant-based fibre, your body is in a better position to support healthy hormone metabolism.
At 52, I think about gut health differently than I did when I was younger. When you are young, it is easy to think of digestion as something that either works or does not. You eat, you feel full, you move on. But as you get older, you start to notice the connections more clearly.
Energy is not separate from digestion.
Skin is not separate from nutrition.
Mood is not separate from sleep and stress.
Hormones are not separate from the way your body absorbs, processes and clears what it no longer needs.
For men, prostate health also becomes more real with age. It is one of those areas many men ignore until a blood test, a symptom or a doctor forces them to pay attention. I do not think that is the right way to approach health. The better approach is to listen earlier. Support the body before it breaks down. Pay attention to digestion, fibre, inflammation, weight, sleep, stress and the small daily choices that shape long-term health.
Gut health will not explain everything. But if the gut is struggling, the rest of the body often has to work harder.
At any age, the body is constantly communicating. Energy, skin, mood, cravings, bloating, sleep and recovery are not random signs. They are signals. They are your body asking you to pay attention. Good gut health will not solve everything. But it can support the conditions your body needs to regulate, recover and thrive.
