ChinaMed Osteo Support Formula is a modern variant of Qing E Wan (Young Maiden Formula) from the 'Formulary of the Tai Ping Welfare Dispensary Bureau' (tai ping hui min he ji ju fang) (1151 CE), a compilation of popular and effective formulas that were used in the public dispensaries of the Song dynastic period.
The original formula was a simple combination of three herbs that were powdered and mixed with garlic and honey to form large pills. It was prescribed for low back pain due to Kidney Yang deficiency.
This formula has been enhanced with the additional herbs that promote bone density and repair, the selection of which is based on the findings of modern research together with the empirical experience of senior clinicians in China. This makes it suitable for the treatment of low back and hip pain in addition to reduced bone density in the elderly. The TCM actions have also been broadened accordingly to include nourishing the Liver Blood and activating the Blood to dispel Blood stasis, both of which are common in this age group and contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
It should be noted that this is a warming formula and should not be used in patients with Fire due to Yin deficiency with signs of dryness and Heat.
