ChinaMed Menopause 2 is an empirical formula that is based on a combination of three formulas: Er Xian Tang (Formula of the Two 'Xian' Herbs a.k.a. Epimedium &amp; Curculigo Combination), Bai He Di Huang Tang and Gan Mai Da zao Tang (Licorice, Wheat and Jujube Combination). The former is a relatively modern formulation that may support hypertension in menopause. Not only was it shown to be effective for this, but it may also have the side effect of reducing hot flushes. The latter formula was first recorded over 2,000 years ago in the Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber (jin gui yao lue fang lun), by Zhang Zhongjing (circa 150 ‐ 219 A.D). It was originally used for 'restless organ' (zang zao) disorder, which was classified under the heading of gynecological disorders. The main symptoms are dysphoria and overwhelming or uncontrollable emotional responses. Bai He Di Huang ang, also from the same classic text, may clear Heat, cool the Blood and calm the Spirit, which may help alleviate hot flushes, anxiety and irritability.

This formula may benefit women in the perimenopausal period, who present with frequent hot flushes with sleep disturbance, irritability and emotional volatility. The pathogenesis of hot flushes in menopause is complex and may include: Kidney Yin deficiency, Kidney Yang deficiency, Kidney Qi deficiency and Spleen Qi deficiency. The first syndrome leads to Yang hyperactivity, whereas the latter three may lead to 'stirring' of the Minister Fire (the Fire of the Life Gate), which is normally stored in the lower Jiao. In many cases, several of these syndromes may occur concurrently. This formula may address hot flushes due to Kidney Yang deficiency or Kidney Qi deficiency together with the Fire that may arise as a consequence. Therefore in cases with marked Kidney Yin deficiency, it is best combined with specific Kidney Yin tonifying formulas as described above.

ChinaMed Blood Moving 2 is a popular variant of Si Wu Tang (Dang-gui Four Combination) and was first recorded in the 'Golden Mirror of Medicine' (yi zong jin jian), 1742, a 90 volume treatise on general medicine, written by a staff of 80 persons, headed by Wu Qian, under the commission of the Qing imperial government. It was originally used for severe menstrual cramping pain in women with Blood deficiency.

Although often used for this purpose to this day, it may also be used for other gynecological orders. In addition, it may also be used as a base formula for the treatment of a broad range of general medical diseases characterised by pain due to Blood stasis, together with Blood deficiency.

The formula is composed of Blood tonics, such as Rehmannia root (di huang), Angelica root (dang gui) and white Paeonia root (bai shao). The remaining herbal ingredients act to promote blood circulation and alleviate pain.

The Sun Herbal formula has been enhanced with the addition of Cyperus rhizome (xiang fu), which assists the main actions of this formula (i.e. to move the Blood and alleviate pain), by promoting free movement of the Qi. In addition it has the following actions: antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, hypotensive, analgesic, antispasmodic.

The two main herbs in this formula that have the action of activating the Blood to dispel stasis are Prunus persica seed (peach seed) (tao ren) and Carthamus flower (hong hua). Prunus seed has the following actions: anti coagulant, anti hypertensive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, detoxicant, anti-allergenic, laxative. Carthamus flower has the following actions: cardiac stimulant, dilates the coronary arteries, anti-platelet, antilipemic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, analgesic, diuretic, immune stimulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, emmenagogue, diaphoretic, induces interferon.

ChinaMed Menopause 1 Formula is a modern empirical formula, designed to treat menopausal syndrome that presents with signs of Yang deficiency: lack of bodily warmth, fluid retention, poor circulation and weight gain. The basic primary pathodynamic in women at the menopause is Kidney deficiency. This may present as primarily Kidney Yin deficiency, Kidney Yang deficiency or a mixed syndrome of both Kidney Yin deficiency and Kidney Yang deficiency.

The presentation addressed by this formula is Kidney Yang deficiency. This is generally accompanied by Spleen Yang deficiency with concomitant stagnation of the Qi and Blood due to the lack of the driving and activating functions of the Yang Qi. In addition to signs of Cold (e.g. cold hands and feet), fluid metabolism tends to become sluggish and the body retains fluid. Other consequences of impaired fluid metabolism include the development of pathogenic Damp and Phlegm, which together with the retained fluids, may manifest in weight gain and puffiness of the skin.

ChinaMed Back and Knees Formula is a variant on the classic formula Du Huo Ji Sheng Wan (Du huo &amp; Loranthus Formula), which was first recorded in 'Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces for Emergencies' (bei ji qian jin yao fang), by Sun Si-miao (late 7th Century). The original formula was designed to treat chronic painful obstruction (bi) syndromes due to Wind-Cold-Damp, in which the health Qi (zheng qi) has become deficient. This corresponds to chronic arthritis in Western medicine.

The original formula has been modified so that the focus of its action is on the back and lower body. In addition, the chronic nature of these conditions is addressed with the inclusion of several herbs that activate the Blood to dispel Blood stasis, along with the tonifying ingredients.

ChinaMed Stress Relief 1 Formula was first recorded in the 'Summary of Internal Medicine' (nei ke zhai yao), edited by Wen Sheng, mid 19th century. It is a variant of Xiao Yao San (a.k.a. STRESS RELIEF 2 Formula CM130) which was recorded some eight centuries previously.

This STRESS RELIEF Formula (CM113) has additional ingredients that clear stagnant Heat and thus provides a stronger clinical action to calm the mind and emotions, induce relaxation and promote sleep.

It is commonly used for a broad range of disorders that are either caused or worsened by stress and emotional strain. It may also be used for conditions that affect menstruation, the bowels and the breasts. Although it's clinical actions are similar to STRESS RELIEF 2 Formula (CM130), the distinguishing clinical features include insomnia, marked irritability, a slightly rapid pulse and some degree of redness of the face, eyes, and/or tongue.

TCM ACTIONS
Soothes the Liver, nourishes the Liver Blood, tonifies the Spleen Qi, clears stagnant Heat.

ChinaMed Calm the Spirit Formula was originally created by Hong Ji (a.k.a. Hong Jiu-You) and appeared in his book, 'Secret Prescriptions for Keeping Health' (she sheng mi pou), 1638. The formula is highly effective for a wide range of psychological disorders that arise from Heart and Kidney Yin deficiency (with failure of co-ordination between these two organs) together with Fire due to deficiency.

The cooling, calming, stabilizing and grounding action of the Water phase (i.e. the Kidney) is failing to exert its influence on the Fire phase (i.e. the Heart), leading to instability and hyperactivity within the latter. Thus, all of the essential attributes of Fire, both physical and psychological, are becoming increasingly disordered. This particularly pertains to the Spirit (shen) that is 'housed' in the Heart.

The common manifestations are over-excitability and hyperactivity, with anxiety, inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of focus and self control. We need to bear in mind that the essential features of conditions treated by this formula involve not only excess in Fire, but also a concomitant deficiency in Water. On the psychological level this is epitomized in the lack of effective functioning of the zhi. This is often translated as 'will'. However it is a broader concept that includes the faculties of will, determination, power of concentration and long term memory.

One of the formula's important clinical uses is for insomnia, particularly in chronic refractory cases. It also commonly used in anxiety disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder), dependency on tranquilisers and dysphoria occurring in association with menopause.

ChinaMed Mens Formula is a modern formulation that is based on traditional principles as well as modern research. It is designed to assist in the restoration of normal sexual functioning in males with impotence or low libido.

According to traditional theory, loss of sexual functioning is due to deficiency of the Kidney Essence. This is generally accompanied with deficiency of the Kidney Yang. This leads to waning of the Fire of the Life Gate (ming men huo), together with insufficiency of the fluid secretions that are involved in reproduction. The former leads to difficulties with performance, while the later may lead to infertility.

Deficiency of the Kidney Essence is a relatively severe type of Kidney deficiency that may be caused by heredity, excessive sexual activity, poor diet, chronic illness, excessive work or strenuous physical activity without adequate rest or sleep. In addition, the Kidney Essence naturally declines with normal ageing.
In adults, one of the major consequences of Kidney Essence deficiency is sexual hypofunction. Once a man has experienced repeated failure of sexual functioning, 'performance anxiety' may set in. This is recognised as a major hindrance to his future ability to successfully engage in sexual intercourse, in spite of a return to physiological normality. For this reason, this formula contains a synergistic group of herbs that soothe the Liver and calm the Spirit, to reduce stress and calm the emotions.

The major part of the formula consists of plant source medicinal substances that nourish the Kidney Essence and invigorate the Kidney Yang. These ingredients have been shown ‐ either individually or in various combinations ‐ to promote sexual function. The formula also includes herbs that tonify the Qi and promote the functional activities of the Spleen, which supports the replenishment of the Kidney Essence.

It is important to note that satisfactory sexual relations are part of the broader picture of a mature, harmonious relationship, which involves openness and sharing on all levels. In addition, the ability of each partner to deal with stress, to make time for self-nurturing and to prioritise the relationship are important factors that should not be overlooked.
