ChinaMed Cough Clear Formula is a modern empirical formula that is based on the classic formula Yin Qiao San (Powder-Formula with Lonicera and Forsythia, also found as Lonicera & Forsythia Formula), combined with several synergistically acting, Lung Clearing, antitussive herbs.
The formula was developed to treat early stage bronchitis that has developed from the progression of a head cold. In TCM terms, exogenous Wind Heat has invaded the Lung, while still remaining unresolved in the Exterior of the body. Thus the clinical manifestations include recent onset productive cough together with a recent history of a head cold which has not completely resolved.
When the exogenous pathogens invade the Lung, the fluid passages that are regulated by the Lung become disrupted. This leads to the accumulation of pathological fluids in the Lung, which to a greater or lesser degree become transformed into Phlegm due to the effects of time, stagnation and Heat. Thus, in addition to Wind and Heat, Phlegm plays a major role in the pathogenesis of the disease at this stage.
The major clinical features are due to obstruction of the Lung Qi by these pathogens. When the Lung's dispersing and descending functions are impeded by Wind, Heat and Phlegm, the Lung Qi tends to counterflow, giving rise to productive cough with thick yellow sputum.
The presence of nasal congestion and fever with aversion to the cold, shows that the Exterior syndrome still persists. Thus, in a clinical situation, there may be a predominance of either the exterior or the interior (i.e. Lung) syndrome. This should be addressed by using one of the formula combinations listed above.
